State Archives of Lucerne / Canton of Lucerne (Switzerland) Public Records Office
According to their statutory mission, the State Archives of Lucerne secure, describe and provide access to all archive-worthy records about the canton of Lucerne, both from the cantonal institutions and of private origin. The archive's holdings can be divided into four groups:
- the administrative records of the city of Lucerne and the Swiss federal state of the 13th to the 18th century,
- the documentation of the cantonal administration and courts since 1798,
- the archives of the monasteries abolished in the 19th century,
- the archives of private persons and institutions such as associations, political parties and industrial or commercial enterprises. This group includes in particular the documents of Catholic organizations working throughout Switzerland.
You can send us an e-mail in English. Your research should have a connection to the canton of Lucerne. To receive useful answers please specify your question. "Please tell me all about the Muller family from Switzerland..." may result in a very general reply. Because of staff and time limitations, the Lucerne State Archives is not in a position to carry out extensive family searches, but it may be able to process simple genealogical requests such as the confirmation of vital dates (birth, marriage, death).
In addition you are welcome to conduct your own on site research on microfilms at the Archives or online.
